I think the concept of an MVP still has its place but the "P" is misleading. Most people seems to understand it as the crappiest version of their product they can think of but I would argue that it is just a way to understand something about your users. So in this sense, even offering a non-scaleable service, a mockup or powerpoint could be an MVP.
However, what's much more important than the MVP is a minimum viable audience that you can kind of pitch your ideas and features to and get feedback in the first place. With such an audience you also have a great pool of first-users ready.
